BlackBerry should be banned in Nigeria - Ali Adoyi Speaks

It will be unfair and totally an act of ingratitude for one not to appreciate the ingenuity of those behind the invention of Blackberry.  Their effort towards unifying the world and simplifying man’s work through the use of the smart phone cannot be appreciated enough.
I have been inspired by one of our prolific writers, Rita Okoye who recently wrote on how young ladies engage young men in a relationship through the use of blackberry phone. In her write-up, Rita carefully expunged how these girls play their game in the most disapproving way. Her write-up did not only open my eyes to the extent these desperate girls could go in their search for money, husband and connection, but was an eye opener to the general evil associated with the use of that witty machine called blackberry . In this article, I will slightly disagree with Rita who held unto one side of her argument without necessarily looking at the angle where the men also got it wrong and become guilty as well as the ladies.
I have looked at several arising issues in this modern day Nigeria. I have seen that Nigerians are real extremists in so many things. I have weighed the importance attached to one’s Blackberry phone and one’s wife, and the difference is clear. I have also weighed the difference between one’s food on the table and the smart phone, and the difference is obvious. It really doesn’t matter whether your wife is falling into a pit, so long as a man can hold on to his blackberry phone, there is no problem.  It doesn’t matter if a man stays awake throughout the night viewing display pictures of his contacts so long as some naughty pictures are displayed and some of the girls are willing to send their nude pictures to satisfy him. It doesn’t matter if a man drives into a pit or into another car so long as he responds to chats while he moves on the road. These are some of the things that are possible while using a blackberry mart phone.
But aside playing against the natural rules of life as a result of blackberry addiction,  some other issues of reckless spending and financial indiscipline are very important issues to be addressed in relation to the use of blackberry in Nigeria.  A man can abandon his responsibility in his home simply because his Blackberry internet service (BIS) has expired. Young people no longer read because they spend their time both day and night chatting with friends through the use of the blackberry phone. Pictures and music are downloaded on the go. Research has shown that most young people’s phones are full of depraved pictures downloaded from the internet; it’s quite easy to go to wapking and waptrick to get all sorts of terrible pictures downloaded into one’s bb phone.
Aside the above issues raised, masturbation has become the order of the day as young people share erotic pictures while in a distant relationship. The amount of time dedicated to blackberry cannot be compared to the few hours spent reading, and researching.  I know a child who can stay awake all through the night chatting with some faceless friends on her bb, and I keep wondering what she learns from the chats.

Investigation has recently revealed in Nigeria that blackberry has caused more evil than good. It has heated up the polity; it has led to broken marriages. Wives have been confronted by husbands why they can’t just let them have access to their phones. Men sleep with their heads on their blackberry phones. Analysis has shown that blackberry has got spirit that can easily possess someone. Recently, about 20 percent of road accidents within towns are caused by the use of this mobile device.
Rumour mongering has taken over the country, most of which are unfounded and baseless. If it is not by copying Charlyboy’s pictures from his DP and syndicating online with the ryder,  “Charlyboy goes nude again” it will be“ 2face Idibia is dead” or Chimaroke Nnamani is dead. The incessant broadcasts on security matters and on Boko Haram have actually downplayed the seriousness of the trouble we face in terms of security in the country at the moment. Why will people make senseless jokes out of what is gradually killing them? BB has made all of us talkative. On Blackberry, We talk so much, boast so much and cry so much about our situation, yet we do not act in relation to the same problems. One thing I know has happened to us is that action has been de-emphasized due to our plenty talk. We can criticize on BB, forward messages, instructing others to forward until it gets to the authority, but what happens after it gets to the authority? It simply explains that you are merely aware of the problems and some of their antics, but it further explains that we are incapable of asking direct questions because we are simply gullible-simply put, we as clueless as they are.
In Nigeria, Blackberry broadcasts spread rumour of crisis where there is no crisis; it talks about war where there is no war, and possibly about bomb blast where there is none.  Some of the broadcasts are capable of steering more crisis and hatred in a country that is already on the verge of collapse.
You may want to argue that the problem is not peculiar to Nigeria, and I will disagree with you.  Nigerians do not use blackberry in the most moderate way. The question any reasonable person should ask at the process of acquiring a blackberry phone is “why do I need it?” If you do not have a tangible answer why you have chosen to use the smart phone, don’t use it. This is not a campaign against blackberry; it’s rather a campaign against our wavering objective; our wobbly purpose and mission.  We tend to become group souls in what we do. We always go with the crowd; we are not exceptional in our standing. We feel ashamed each time we stand alone in a group, even when our reason for standing alone is genuine. Must we always go with the crowd if we must not?  Must I use the smart phone because friends tab the buttons away while walking through the streets, inside moluwe, or sitting at the owner’s corner of a Keke Napepe? Blackberry accident is funny but disastrous; the next step you are about to take while tapping away with rapt attention is taking you into a gutter; a woman could burn her pot while cooking because she is tapping away-sad day for the husband and the children.
I use blackberry, but I do not allow Blackberry to use me. The day Blackberry will use me is the day I will drop it. If we cannot be moderate with the use of this phone, then my next memo to the government is to push for the ban of this seductive mobile phone. Thank God, I have someone like David Mark who will always support my motion. My imagination speaks “Those in support of the continuous use of BB in Nigeria should say “I” – “IIIIIIIIII” those against should say “nay” -“nay” Gbam…the“I’s have it… Gbam…

How T.B Joshua Delivered me from Smoking - Tonto Dikeh

Nollywood actress Tonto Dike, 27, who most of the time is in the news for the wrong reasons recently showed a generous side of her that should ordinarily get her in our good books but that is not the bone of contention now.

According to her, “I didn’t quit smoking by myself. I was watching a program on TV with Prophet T.B. Joshua and he was laying hands on people and praying for them. I love to watch his programs on Emmanuel TV. When he was praying, he said, ‘Lay your hands on the TV’ and I just laid my hands that day. I actually needed something else from God, not to quit smoking because I loved smoking! However, after praying I sat back and I think I slept off.”
Going further, she said, “When I woke up, I took a stick of cigarette and I felt crazy. I couldn’t even imagine that I took it up to smoke in the first place. It felt like poison!”
It’s too early to say but let’s hope she has quitted for real because it takes alot of dedication and personal conviction to lay off cigarettes especially after being a smoker for that long.

Don, Prof Ayodele suggest Reinvesting Ibori’s Money on Education

In the midst of what can only be described as a shameful tussle between the Federal Government and the government of Delta State for the ownership of the yet unclaimed money recovered from former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, a university don has advised that the money be re-invested in the education system.
The don, Prof Ayodele Jegede, a University of Ibadan lecturer has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to order that recovered stolen money be re-invested in the education system. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Jegede made this call on Tuesday in Ibadan while thanking the former Ogun State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Sina Kawonise, for renovating some offices in the institution at the cost of N2.1m.
Professor Jegede said all the stolen money recovered from corrupt former governors and other public office holders should be invested in the development of the education sector. In his words the don said, “The latest of such funds are those from James Ibori running into several millions of dollars… The recovered funds should be invested in education to build young Nigerians who can make the dream of the founding fathers come to reality.”
He continues: “It should not be sent back to state government or be kept in the Federal Government vault because it may soon disappear… I am saying that funds recovered from fraudulent practices should be dedicated to a project.” He then submitted that every such recovered fund should be dedicated to building an infrastructure for Nigerians in the health, education and power sectors.

Kaffy, the lady with the proud name Dance Queeen is said to be set to launch a dance reality Tv known as DARE TO DANCE. This is one lady that has taken dancing to the very edge in the Nigerian entertainment. Truly if there one lady that is set to rock such a reality show it should be Kaffy-judging by her quest and promise in  that line. It is definitely a show to look forward to, and one cannot but yearn to see the show.

How We Killed The General’s Daughter —Suspects

Two murder suspects who were paraded today by the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, Echezona Nwabufor, 33, and Ezekiel Nnechuwu Olisa Eloka, 23, have narrated how they drugged the daughter of a retired General, Miss Cynthia Akuzogwu Udoka, 25, and strangled her in order to steal her money.
One of the suspects, Eloka, said they killed Cynthia because they thought she had a lot of money in her possession. But after the dastardly act, they did not find a reasonable amount of money on her.

According to the suspects, “we met her on the facebook on our Blackberry. We invited her to come to Lagos to buy goods at cheap prices.
“When she got to Lagos, we took her to a hotel in Festac. We thought she had a lot of money, but she said she didn’t have any money. We gave her Reflon tablet in her Ribena drink. After this, we slept with her for 12 hours in that hotel. We discovered that the tablet did not work quickly on her.
“We then attacked her, tied her up and used cellotape to cover her mouth. After that, we beat her to tell us where she kept the money.
“When we didn’t get any money from her, we tied her mouth and strangled her and then we abandoned her in the hotel and fled.”
The suspects and the General’s daughter became friends on Facebook and were exchanging messages and phone calls.
She told them she was coming to Lagos. They met her at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja from where they ushered her into a hotel in Festac town, Lagos.
Briefing journalists on how policemen were able to arrest the suspects, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Abubakar Manko, said detectives made use of the close circuit television, CCTV, at the hotel where the crime was committed to identify them.
The late Miss Cynthia Akuzogwu Udoka
The Area Commander, Area ‘E’ Police Command, ACP Okoro added that the suspects who are undergraduates of Nigerian universities were nabbed through the call logs of the telephone conversations they had with the late Cynthia who was a post graduate student of Nasarawa State University.
After the suspected killers strangled Cynthia and abandoned her in the hotel, the hotel management deposited her corpse at the mortuary of Isolo General Hospital in Lagos.
ACP Okoro stated that many ATM cards, about 23 SIM cards, different identity cards were recovered from the suspects.
Police sources said the two suspects will soon be arraigned in court to answer a charge of murder.
Meanwhile, the late Cynthia’s best friend, Aishatu Ene Ella, has paid a glowing tribute to the deceased.
She said: “In the last few days, I have seen my heart torn, stripped and broken into pieces, first by the disappearance and death of my dearest friend and secondly by the wickedness exhibited by Nigerians passing judgement on someone they never knew or met.”

Nigeria Governors Forum meeting and its stalemate End

The meeting of the Nigeria Governors` Forum (NGF) on Wednesday in Abuja ended in a stalemate without the usual media briefing by its Chairman, Gov. Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers.

The meeting which was to discuss the forum’s stance on the on-going constitution amendment was attended by nine governors and eight Deputies.

The governors include those of Rivers, Ebonyi, Akwa-Ibom, Ekiti, Ondo, Sokoto, Kaduna, Kano and Kogi states.
Deputy Governors of Niger, Adamawa, Yobe, Jigawa, Cross River, Bayelsa, Delta and Nasarawa states also attended the meeting.
The forum had at its last meeting of August 8 deferred its debate on the on-going constitutional amendment until the end of the Ramadan fasting period.
Amaechi, the forum’s chairman, said the forum would continue the debate when the Muslim faithful had returned from the Lesser Hajj.
This however meant that the media was not briefed on the outcome of the closed-door meeting which ended without any communiqué.
It would be recalled that the northern state governors, ahead of the review of the 1999 Constitution by the National Assembly, had opposed the creation of state police.
It had also opposed the inclusion of the country’s six geo-political zones in the constitution.
The governors also demanded the abrogation of the offshore/onshore dichotomy and the derivation principle. NAN

Super Eagle Calls back Brown Ideye and Osaze Odemwingie

Strikers Osaze Odemwingie and Brown Ideye will be recalled by Nigeria as they gun for a win in next month’s AFCON qualifier in Liberia.
MTNFootball.com has again scooped that Osaze and Ideye, who were both not considered for Nigeria qualifiers in June, will on Thursday be named among the Europe-based stars for the 2013 Nations Cup clash on September 8 in Monrovia.
A top team official said: “Keshi wants more fire power and so the recall of both Osaze and Brown (Ideye).”
Osaze got off to a flying start with a penalty goal for his English club West Bromwich Albion against Liverpool at the weekend, while Ideye has been in fine form in front of goal for his Ukrainian club Dynamo Kiev both in the UEFA Champions League and the league.
Other foreign-based pros for the Liberia clash are Mikel Obi, Elderson Echiejile, Vincent Enyeama, Victor Moses, Ahmed Musa, Austin Ejide, Ike Uche, Obiora Nwankwo, Efe Ambrose and skipper Joseph Yobo.
MTNFootball.com has already revealed that Chelsea midfielder Mikel is staging a return to the national team even though coach Stephen Keshi still has reservations about how the player will cope on the artificial pitch in Liberia.
Yobo, who was sidelined by injury for the team’s June qualifiers, will return to lead the team to battle after he has sorted out his club future by joining Turkish giants Fenerbahce on a permanent deal from EPL side Everton.
“With his transfer issues sorted out now, Joseph Yobo is expected to return. And being that the team is playing away, the thinking of the coach is to bring in players that would add bite to the team up front,” stated a top Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) official.
The foreign pros will in the week leading to the match join up with players from the Nigeria Premier League, who resumed training on Monday in Abuja.

3 People Arrested Over 25-yr-old’s kidneys’ removal

Police in Bauchi State have arraigned three suspects before a Magistrate Court in the state for allegedly removing the two kidneys of 25-year-old Abubakar Buba. Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Amos Ukpe, told the court that the suspects, Mijinyawa Abdulkadir, Abdullahi Yusuf and Mohammed Zangina were charged with conspiracy, attempt to commit culpable homicide, causing grievous hurt and impersonation, contrary to Section 132 of the Penal code.
Ukpe told the court: “One Buba Ahmadu reported to the Police that his son, Abubakar from Bununu in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area, felt sick and went for medical treatment in a private clinic owned by one Mijinyawa Abdulkadir, who is a Nurse by profession.
“At the clinic, one Aminchi introduced himself as a doctor of the said hospital and recommended Abubakar for scanning at Almanzoor scanning centre. Aminchi, with Yusuf Zangina conducted an illegal appendix surgery, which led to the removal of the two kidneys of Abubakar, who is now critically ill at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi.
“The patient, Abubakar, is currently undergoing dialysis treatment contrary to Sections 96, 132 and 229 of the Penal Code.”
In his ruling, the trial magistrate, Mr. Isa Mohammed, granted the bail of the accused on the ground of his illness in the sum of N2 million with two sureties each in like sum.
He added that one of the sureties must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and own a landed property worth N10 million within the court’s jurisdiction and verifiable.

Gulak warns Obasanjo to Stop distracting President Jonathan

Against the backdrop of insinuations in political circles that former President Olusegun Obasanjo has endorsed Governors Sule Lamido and Rotimi Amaechi of Jigawa and Rivers states respectively as President and Vice President in 2015 elections, Special Adviser on Political Matters to the President, Mr. Ahmed Gulak yesterday warned the former president to desist from dabbling into the political future of President Goodluck Jonathan but to join hand with him in delivering his electoral promises to Nigerians. Obasanjo has, however, denied working towards installing anyone in the next polls, saying he has been pre-occupied with more pressing national issues such as security, poverty, malaria, polio and infant and maternal mortality, to have time for politics.
Governor Amaechi had also denied he was running with Lamido, while some northern groups had received the news of Lamido’s choice with jubilation.
Gulak, who handed down the warning in an exclusive interview with Vanguard in Abuja, asked Obasanjo to stop distracting the president by unnecessarily stirring the political waters.
The 27 Local Government Areas in Jigawa State are reported to have burst into dancing and singing when the news of the governor’s consideration for the nation’s top job, filtered into Dutse, the state capital on Monday.
Jonathan’s political adviser, who was apparently irked by the development, said it was unfortunate for the former President to be involved in the alleged endorsement of the two serving governors, when there was a sitting President and leader of the party.
Gulak said, “If it is true that Obasanjo is fronting Lamido and Amaechi for 2015, I assume it is not true, I would say that he has his own right. But the question is in what capacity would he do that?
“Is it as the father of the nation or the President of Nigeria or what? First, Obasanjo is not the president of Nigeria and secondly, although he is one of our leaders, nobody has arrogated the monopoly of anointing candidates to him.
“Having said that, if it is true that Obasanjo has done what has been credited to him, then it is safe to say that he is not fair to this country and I believe that what this country needs to do is to deliver on the promises made to the electorate in 2011″.
“Obasanjo was part of the system from 1976 to 1979 and then from 1999 to 2007. Obasanjo should play the role of a father-figure, to advise and not to keep on pock- nosing into the affairs of the nation by choosing people who should run and who should not.
“He had played his role, everybody gave him their support. One good turn deserves another. It is therefore incumbent on him to support President Goodluck Jonathan to deliver on his electoral promises to the people and not to distract the system by stirring the political waters unnecessarily.
“When we reach the bridge we shall cross it. But we are only in 2012, just one year after the last election. Are we therefore telling Nigerians that everything is just about election? Why are we relegating to the background our promises to the nation?” Gulak queried angrily.
Turning to some northern elders said to be opposed to the re-election of President Jonathan in 2015 as prescribed by law, Gulak described the call as the ‘greatest joke of the century’, saying that nobody had the right to stop the President from contesting if he decides to do so in 2015.
According to him, “President Jonathan has that constitutional right and nobody can abridge it; it is left for him to decide whether to contest or not. But no individual, group or institution can take away that right if we agree we are running a constitutional and democratic government.
“It is his right to run or not. No individual or group has the right to warn President Jonathan not to aspire to lead the nation as provided by the law of the land. You can’t ask him not to pick the party’s nomination form.
“Nobody can intimidate President Goodluck Jonathan; absolutely nobody because by the grace of God, he is the president of Nigeria. The fact that the man is simple, humble and does not abuse executive powers like some of our past leaders does not mean that he is weak,” he declared.
The political aide also took on former FCT Minister, Malam Nasir el-Rufai and former parliamentarian, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, for recently asking Jonathan to resign over his inability to solve the nation’s rising security challenges, saying that they were not fit to speak for the north.
Obasanjo denies 2015 plot
Meanwhile, apparently worried by the furore triggered by his endorsement of two serving governors to vie for the Presidency come 2015, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday denied working towards installing anyone in the next polls.
Obasanjo said he was preoccupied with more pressing national issues to have time for politics, enumerating such challenges to include national security, poverty, malaria, polio and infant and maternal mortality.
The former President in a statement made available to Vanguard by his media aide, Garba Deen Muhammed, said however that he recognised the rights and privileges all Nigerians including the two governors who were mentioned as having been endorsed by him, to vie for any office of their choice in the country.
He pointed out that although individuals might aspire to any office of their choice; it is the political party that eventually determines who flies its flag.
Obasanjo pleaded with Nigerians to be mindful of the present challenges the nation was passing through and to contribute their quota towards finding lasting solutions rather than speculating on an election that is still far away.
He took exception to the statement credited to the former Oyo State Governor, Lam Adesina, to the effect that the former president’s battled against corruption was deceitful and cited the award of contract for the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as an example of corrupt practice.
Part of the statement read, “Former President Obasanjo feels it was sad and unfortunate that at his age, Lam Adesina would make statements that can only ridicule him and make nonsense of his elderly status.
“It is self-evident that no government after former President Obasanjo has fought corruption with the same commitment as his regime. It is equally self-evident that the institutions for fighting corruption that the country relies on today were set up by the Obasanjo regime, likewise some of the individuals manning those institutions today were nurtured by the same Obasanjo regime that Adesina so mischievously described as “deceitful”.
“Lam Adesina’s attribution of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway contract to the Obasanjo regime shows how puerile, or perhaps how senile the former governor has become. The contract in question was not awarded by the Obasanjo regime. It was in fact awarded after Chief Obasanjo had left office.
“As for the oft-repeated issue of the amount purported to have been misappropriated in the power sector during the regime of Obasanjo, it is significant that today, it is those who made those false allegations against former President Obasanjo regime that are being prosecuted for corruption. Interestingly the current power reform that is now being pursued was laid down by the Obasanjo regime.
“If Adesina was not consumed by the wicked desire to cast aspersions on former President Obasanjo, he would have known these simple details and would not have ridiculed himself by making the pedestrian comments he made.
“Adesina would put his elderly years to better use by telling the people of Oyo state how many jobs he created while in office, what environmental policies he developed that would have prevented the tragic incidence of flooding plaguing Oyo state, how many kilometres of road he built, how many poor people he helped to own their own houses, etc, rather than peddling lies in the quest for relevance.
“ Obasanjo remains one of the world’s most respected statesmen of all times. No amount of slander and false accusations can change that,” he said.
